Week 3: 5-15 Report

In the beginning of the week I read an article for the library zoom training session called The Koguryo Controversy, National Identity, and the Sino-Korean Relations Today. I liked that article because it was easy to read and very short. I felt that it was easier to understand the content since it was short and to the point. I thought it was interesting how the conflict between China and Korea happened and how they stole a part of their culture and claimed it as their own. This article is a good review of events, however I felt that it is missing details because of how short it is. I would use this to get information, but most likely not use this for a source because it has no details and is only a quick overview. However, during the library zoom session I felt that I did not have the opportunity to discuss how I felt about the article and I did not have a chance to speak.

For Fridays reading, I was pretty good understanding a few pages that were out of the text. I understood the material that I have heard of before like about the three kingdoms. It was interesting to get more into those topics and what distinguishes them apart. I read that the Goguryeo was the most powerful kingdom, and the Silla was right after. Silla was the one who built alliances and was able to unite the peninsula together. I got lost in the text sometimes and after discussing during Fridays class I have a better understanding. I understood better the rivalry between Korea and China. In addition I did not understand about Tan’gun, and Fridays lecture taught me that is is the mythical founder of Joseon. Lastly I learned more about the Han dynasty and the history of the commanderies.

For next week, I want to get a better understanding of the history that we have already went through so far. I also want to have options ready for my project and make sure that is what I want to chose.
